RUBY

The birthstone for July is Ruby, the red variety of Corundum.  Most Rubies used in jewelry are mined and cut into gemstones in Southeast Asia. The finest Rubies come from Burma.  Many people buy Ruby jewelry because they love the incredible colors of red it comes in.  Ruby may be very light pink, bright red, or a deep blood red color. Generally speaking, the darker the color is, the higher the value of the gem will be, but the clarity and proportions also have a large impact on value.  Pink Ruby is actually properly called Pink Sapphire.

SAPPHIRE

The birthstone of September is Sapphire, the blue variety of Corundum, and is almost the identical composition of Ruby.  All the colors Corundum is found in are called Sapphire unless its red, then it is called Ruby.  Ruby and Sapphire therefore have all of the same chemical and physical properties.  Sapphire is also mined primarily in Southeast Asia.  Ceylon Sapphire, named for the location in which it is found, is considered to be the finest Sapphire available.  A Ceylon Sapphire is one of the rare exceptions to the rule that deeper color is associated with higher value.
